FAMU Students Get a Break

Florida A&M University (FAMU) has announced that it will be closed on January 21 and 22. This closure includes everyone—students, faculty, staff, and even non-essential personnel—due to the expected inclement weather. The main campus food services will offer limited hours, running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 21. But here’s the catch: that will depend on how the roads are looking. The Venom Shuttle will also operate from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., again subject to conditions.

Unfortunately, both the Educational Research Center for Child Development (ERCCD) and the FAMU Developmental Research School (DRS) will be closed, and all athletic events have been canceled. The FAMU Career Expo? Canceled too. Sorry folks!

FSU Following Suit

Florida State University (FSU) isn’t taking any chances either. Both the Tallahassee and Panama City campuses will cancel classes and shut down normal operations on January 21 and 22. Essential services will continue, and students can expect things to get back to normal by 5 a.m. on January 23.

Leon County Schools Make Adjustments

Leon County Schools are also reacting to the predicted weather. On January 21, students will be sent home an hour early, and schools will remain closed on January 22. Good news is, they plan to reopen for business as usual on January 23. However, all after-school activities, including athletic and arts practices, are off the table for January 21 and 22.

Libraries, Preschools, and More Closed

In addition to schools and universities, public-facing offices in Leon County will close at 5 p.m. on January 21 and take the entire day on January 22 off. Leon County libraries will also be shutting their doors early, closing at 5 p.m. on January 21 and staying closed the following day.

Adding to the closure list, Tallahassee State College will be shutting down on January 21 and 22, though FPSI classes will make the transition to online. The Young Actors Theatre is in the same boat, closing for both days as well. Keiser University in Tallahassee will close early at 1 p.m. on January 21 and remain closed on January 22.

Concerts and Meetings Canceled

Fans of live music will be disappointed to hear that James McMurtry’s concert, originally scheduled for January 21 at The Moon, has been canceled, with a plan to reschedule. Additionally, the Gadsden County Board of County Commission meeting set for that date has also been nixed.
