Sponsor Our ArticlesIn a momentous decision, the Tallahassee City Commission voted unanimously to rename three streets, celebrating the legacy of exceptional community leaders connected to Florida A&M University. Osceola Street will transform into Rudy Hubbard Street, honoring the legendary football coach. Additionally, Okaloosa Street will become Dr. Carolyn Ryals Lane, and Campbell Street will be renamed E. Lilyan Spencer Memorial Way, creating enduring tributes to the impact these individuals have had on education and the community.
Tallahassee has long been a city that cherishes its community and the heroes that shape it. Recently, the City Commission made headlines for a heartwarming decision that unanimously passed with a 5-0 vote: three streets in the city will be renamed to honor exceptional community leaders who have made a lasting impact, particularly within Florida A&M University (FAMU).
First up, the beloved Osceola Street will officially become Rudy Hubbard Street. This name change is a tribute to the legendary football coach who dedicated his career to FAMU, leading the football team from 1974 to 1985. Hubbard is not merely a name in a record book; he is a College Football Hall of Famer, known for steering the Rattlers to two Black College Football National Championships, alongside the historic NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship in 1978. Remarkably, this title remains the only one of its kind clinched by a historically Black college or university, adding an extra layer of pride to his already illustrious career.
At 78 years old, Hubbard’s statistics tell a compelling story: a remarkable overall record of 83 wins, 48 losses, and 3 ties during his 12 seasons at FAMU. His contributions transcend victories on the field; they have fostered community spirit and brought people together in celebration of sports and achievement.
Angela Suggs, the athletic director at FAMU, has spoken highly of Hubbard’s influence, noting the positive ramifications of his work for both the university and the surrounding community. Before stepping into his coaching role at FAMU, he also earned recognition as Ohio State University’s first Black assistant coach after a successful stint as a running back, showcasing his versatility and commitment to education.
Moving along to another important renaming, Okaloosa Street is set to become Dr. Carolyn Ryals Lane. Dr. Ryals was a beloved educator and community volunteer whose decades of service and commitment to the local population earned her several “Teacher of the Year” awards. It’s heartwarming to see her memory and contributions recognized in such a meaningful way. Her work touched the lives of many students and inspired countless individuals to reach for their dreams.
Lastly, Campbell Street will gain the honorary designation of E. Lilyan Spencer Memorial Way. This name pays homage to the late educator and former principal at Bond Junior High School, who dedicated her life to nurturing the next generation. Honorary designations like this allow the community to recognize these influential leaders without changing property addresses or disrupting the lives of current residents.
The City Commission’s recent actions reflect its commitment to honoring local trailblazers. The renaming doesn’t come as a surprise, as the city has previously recognized various figures, including the renowned musician T-Pain and tennis icon Althea Gibson. These changes are part of an exciting movement within Tallahassee to celebrate and uplift the individuals who have shaped its heritage.
As FAMU’s current head football coach, James Colzie III, pointed out, this renaming of Osceola Street is not just about changing a sign. It’s a continuous acknowledgment of Hubbard’s groundbreaking achievements while instilling pride in the university’s history.
Details about the official renaming ceremonies for these streets have yet to be announced, but the community is eagerly awaiting the celebrations. The streets of Tallahassee are not just thoroughfares; they are pathways that reflect the stories and legacies of remarkable individuals who have paved the way for future generations. With these name changes, the city is actively celebrating its history while keeping the spirit of community alive.
So, keep an eye out, Tallahassee! With these vibrant new names, your streets will tell rich stories of triumph, legacy, and inspiration for years to come!
