Sponsor Our ArticlesTallahassee has launched a new school speed zone enforcement program aimed at enhancing safety for children commuting to school. The initiative, starting March 31, 2025, will utilize automated speed detection in two school zones, targeting areas around Ruediger Elementary/Raa Middle School and Desoto Trail Elementary School. A review revealed over 47,000 speed violations in a single day, prompting the introduction of this program. With fines covering the costs, the program anticipates generating $275,000 annually to support community safety efforts.
Folks in Tallahassee, get ready for some exciting news that promises to make our streets safer for our kids. As of March 31, 2025, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) has launched a new school speed zone enforcement program. This is a big step in ensuring our young ones can safely get to and from school, which makes it a win for everyone!
So, where will this enforcement program be taking place? It kicks off in two active school zones:
The decision to start this program came after some serious detective work. A review by TPD and the City’s Technology and Innovations Department looked at the impact of speed on safety around schools. And guess what? It revealed some startling statistics! In just one day’s observation at Leon County public schools, over 100 vehicles were caught exceeding the speed limit by at least ten miles per hour. All told, more than 47,000 speed violations were recorded. That’s a staggering number!
The new school speed zone enforcement program is expected to help cut down on these alarming violations significantly. Back in April 2024, the Tallahassee City Commission unanimously agreed to introduce a new ordinance that laid the groundwork for this initiative. Upcoming months will feature public hearings, leading to full enforcement.
The nifty part about this program is its modern twist—automated speed detection systems are all set to capture those speedy drivers. Best of all? The costs involved with this program will be covered by fines from violators, meaning it won’t cost taxpayers a dime.
If you’re thinking about pushing the pedal to the metal, you might want to think twice! The new law states that anyone caught speeding more than 10 miles per hour over the limit will receive a $100 fine. And don’t think you’ll get away without a notice; fines will be mailed directly to the vehicle owner, ensuring accountability.
Before the enforcement kicks in, there will be a big public awareness campaign to inform everyone about the new rules. A 30-day warning period will allow drivers to get used to the idea of speed zones and make the necessary adjustments. So, while there will be some grace period at first, get ready for strict enforcement afterwards!
Excitingly, this program may extend to incorporate a county-wide school zone speed enforcement program. Discussions are set to take place in an upcoming County Commission meeting after a study revealed potential violations at 23 of the 32 school zones across the county on just one school day.
In total, the program expects to generate around $275,000 annually for the county, thanks to the speeding tickets. Each speeding violation, applying a fine of $100, will help fund this initiative, ensuring that both education and safety are prioritized within our community.
With cameras set to be installed in 25 different school zones and operational throughout the whole school day, Tallahassee is making strides towards a safer future for our children. The combination of education, technology, and enforcement is key to enhancing safety around our schools. So mark your calendars, folks! Change is coming, and it’s all about keeping our little ones secure.
