Tallahassee Rallies to Support Local Restaurant After Devastating Flooding
In the charming city of Tallahassee, a spirit of camaraderie has begun to seep through the community as local restaurateurs and residents unite to support the beloved Backwoods Crossing. This rustic, farm-to-table eatery faced dire times following relentless rainstorms on April 10, which inundated the area with an astonishing three feet of water.
The Rice Brothers Step Up
Enter the Rice brothers, Jesse and Tyler, who own Backwoods Crossing and are at the forefront of the fundraising efforts. To help cover the substantial restoration costs, they launched a GoFundMe campaign, setting a goal of $25,000. Yet, the outpouring of support has been heartwarming, with local supporters on social media platforms like Facebook exceeding their initial goal by raising over $25,000. Just wow!
Local Eateries Join the Cause
The amazing teamwork didn’t stop there. Local businesses have jumped in to assist in the recovery effort. Notably, Red Elephant Pizza and Grill announced that they would donate a generous 25% of their dine-in and to-go sales during a special fundraiser on April 24. Bringing communities together through delicious food, it’s a win for everyone involved!
The excitement didn’t end there! Browns Kitchen also stepped up, organizing their own fundraiser starting April 16. As part of their annual “Knife Sharpening” event, patrons pay just $5 to have their kitchen knives sharpened, with the proceeds aimed directly at supporting Backwoods Crossing. As of April 24, this creative fundraising effort had already yielded an impressive $1,285 by sharpening 257 knives. The community has come together beautifully, especially since this event had been moved up from its usual September schedule for Second Harvest’s Hunger Action Month.
Backwoods Crossing Reopens
After weathering 15 days of closure due to the flooding, Backwoods Crossing is thrilled to announce that they reopened for full service on April 24 at 4 p.m. Although the doors are back open, the aftermath of the flooding remains visible, with four to five inches of standing water still lingering in some sections of the restaurant’s parking lot and garden. As such, guests are kindly asked to avoid these areas for their safety.
The restaurant is resuming its full menu, which includes their much-loved specialty sandwiches, appetizers, salads, soups, and entrees. However, food lovers should note that the garden menu will be temporarily unavailable due to the ongoing recovery process.
