The month of March sees the celebration of Women’s History Month, recognizing the contributions of women throughout history. Celebrating local talent, the Maclay School Boys Soccer Team was lauded for their outstanding performance this season. Adding to the spirit of awareness, the Commission recognized Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, highlighting the need for continued support for those affected by this chronic illness. Rounding off the proclamations was a heartfelt tribute to Leonard Hamilton, the former FSU men’s basketball coach, who has inspired countless athletes and fans.
In the realm of city governance, a total of 12 consent items were approved, showcasing the commission’s commitment to efficient city management. One key topic was the introduction of Ordinance No. 25-Z-05, which proposes an amendment to the Official Zoning Map. This would change the zoning for 3.92 acres at 2748 Pecan Road from Medium Density Residential (MR-1) to Urban Residential (R-4). Interested parties can look forward to a public hearing scheduled for April 16, 2025.
Another significant ordinance was Ordinance No. 25-O-07, for a voluntary annexation petition concerning a 43.5-acre parcel situated off Meridian Road, just north of Summerbrooke. This ordinance also has a public hearing lined up for April 16, following a decisive vote by the Leon County Commission just prior, on April 8, 2025.
In a unanimous vote of 5-0, the Commission awarded Landscape Maintenance Services to Rotolo Consultants, Inc., ensuring the city’s green spaces will receive the care they deserve. Meanwhile, the Commission began examining proposed adjustments to the governance structure of Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare (TMH). A final vote on these changes is set to take place on April 16, 2025.
On the transportation front, the Commission adopted Resolution No. 25-R-13, establishing a grant agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation for the International Processing Facility project at Tallahassee International Airport. StarMetro’s Bus Electrification Infrastructure Construction contract with Camber Operating Company, Inc. also won unanimous approval, reflecting a strong push towards eco-friendly public transport.
The meeting wasn’t without its controversies as a vote of 4-1 (with Commissioner Matlow dissenting) approved Resolution Nos. 25-R-11 and 25-R-12 regarding Eminent Domain Action for improvements to FAMU Way Phase IV. Community development was also a central focus, with the first public hearing on Ordinance 25-Z-06 discussing a proposed multi-family residential development with 255 units south of Interstate 10.
In another vital move, the Commission held a public hearing related to the Amended FY 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan and FY 2024-2025 Annual Action Plan, which allocates $810,355 in HUD funding to combat homelessness. Additionally, the Commission kicked off discussions for the upcoming FY 2024-2029 Five-Year Consolidated Plan and the FY 2025-2026 Annual Action Plan, earmarking $4,460,079 for eligible activities to benefit the community. The second public hearing on these plans is set for June 11, 2025.
