Orlando, Florida – Dallas-based Southwest Airlines (WN) has announced the launch of four new intra-Florida routes from Orlando International Airport (MCO), scheduled to begin in August 2025. This expansion will connect Orlando with Fort Myers (RSW), Miami (MIA), Sarasota (SRQ), and West Palm Beach (PBI). Each route is set to operate twice daily, significantly enhancing the airline’s domestic network within the state.
Currently, Southwest Airlines runs approximately 4,000 daily flights across North America and to certain nearby countries. The airline serves over 100 domestic and around 14 international destinations. The new routes will complement existing services from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale (FLL), strengthening Southwest’s foothold in Florida’s competitive air travel market.
The addition of these routes comes at a time when Southwest seeks to capture more regional travel demand and enhance connectivity for both residents and tourists in Florida. Competition in the region continues to intensify, as Frontier Airlines (F9) also operates on similar routes, suggesting that travelers will benefit from increased options and potentially lower fares.
Besides these new routes, Southwest Airlines has filed for significant service modifications for its Hawaii routes, effective in April and June 2025. Notably, the airline will reduce flight frequencies on several key routes from Honolulu. For instance, weekly flights to Kahului will decrease from 77 to 55, while services to Kona will drop from 42 to 34.
However, there will be some selective increases, such as expanding the Honolulu-Las Vegas service to three daily flights starting June 5, 2025. This adjustment reflects Southwest’s ongoing effort to optimize its flight schedule to better meet customer demand.
In a bid to enhance convenience for passengers, Southwest plans to introduce 33 overnight flights in its summer 2025 schedule, including 13 new redeye services. This expansion will link various cities across the United States, providing travelers with more flexible options. New routes will connect major destinations like Honolulu to Los Angeles and Lihue to Las Vegas.
Another highlight of the upcoming schedule includes a new seasonal service launching between Colorado Springs and Cancun, Mexico, starting on June 14, 2025. This service aims to offer Colorado travelers direct access to the popular beach destination, operating on Saturdays throughout the summer.
Overall, the new intra-Florida routes and service modifications showcase Southwest Airlines’ commitment to enhancing its travel offerings. The adjustment in service frequencies and the introduction of new routes demonstrate the airline’s focus on providing increased travel flexibility for passengers while navigating the competitive aviation landscape in Florida and beyond. Travelers can anticipate a more robust network, catering to both local needs and tourist demands as they plan their future flights.
