Orlando Braces for Major Theme Park Rivalry as Universal’s Epic Universe Prepares to Open

Orlando Set to Experience Major Theme Park Rivalry with Upcoming Epic Universe

Orlando, Florida – This May, the local entertainment landscape is poised for significant transformation as Universal Orlando Resort prepares to launch its much-anticipated expansion, Epic Universe. The new theme park, featuring five themed areas including Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic, aims to challenge the longstanding dominance of Walt Disney World in Central Florida.

A New Chapter in Local Tourism

The opening of Epic Universe on May 22, 2024, signals a pivotal moment for the region’s tourism industry, with industry experts predicting a potential influx of visitors. In 2023, Disney’s flagship park, Magic Kingdom, attracted over 17 million visitors, while Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida welcomed approximately 10 million and 9 million guests, respectively.

Disney’s Response to Competition

In response to the looming competition, Walt Disney World has announced its own expansion plans. Following a $17 billion development deal approved by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, Disney outlined new attractions at their parks during the recent D23 event held in August. These expansions include a Disney villains-themed land and various additions to its existing parks, with special attention to attractions based on beloved franchises like “Cars,” “Indiana Jones,” and “Encanto.”

Shifting Consumer Choices

Industry experts, including Dennis L. Speigel, founder of International Theme Park Services, suggest that the competition between Universal and Disney could lead to a “reshuffling” of visitor choices in the coming years. Speigel anticipates that Epic Universe could attract at least 6 million visitors in its first year, potentially taking away a portion of guest attendance from both Disney and other competing parks.

Economic Benefits of Competition

The competitive environment is expected to benefit the broader Central Florida economy. Jakob Wahl, President of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, highlighted the advantages of competition, stating that it fosters innovation and leads to better experiences for guests. “When you’re running and someone’s catching up with you,” Wahl remarked, “you run faster and try to beat them.”

The Future Looks Bright

In 2022, Walt Disney World generated approximately $40 billion in economic impact across Florida, supporting over 250,000 jobs. In contrast, Epic Universe is projected to bring $11.5 billion in direct and indirect economic benefits, showcasing the importance of theme parks in fueling Florida’s economy.

As Universal gears up for the unveiling of Epic Universe, the effects of this rivalry will likely extend beyond just visitor numbers. Experts believe the competition could lead to longer stays for tourists, as families may opt to explore more attractions during their visits. “The rising tide lifts all boats in the tourism industry,” Speigel remarked, emphasizing the positive implications for both parks.

Conclusion

With Epic Universe debuting soon, the theme park landscape in Central Florida is about to get more exciting. Both Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World are actively working to enhance the visitor experience, and this competition stands to benefit not only the parks but the entire state of Florida.
