Lincoln Girls Basketball Team Shines as State Champions and Continues Winning Streak
It’s an exciting time for the Lincoln community as our very own girls basketball team has been lighting up the court! Under the guiding hand of Coach Kloe Froebe, who just made history herself as the first player in Central State Eight (CS8) history to snag the title of Illinois Ms. Basketball, the Lincoln girls team has wrapped up their season with a perfect record of 38-0. Yes, you read that right! A flawless season!
A Season to Remember
To top it off, the Railsplitters became the proud champions of the Class 3A state title, winning their championship game against Chatham Glenwood with a score of 60-44. What’s even more impressive? The team showcased their dominance throughout the season, achieving an average margin of victory of 37.2 points per game. That’s some serious talent on display!
During the playoffs, our girls set the pace with such ferocity that they triggered a running clock in almost every game, proving they meant business until they reached the state semifinals. Just think about that for a moment: a whole team that knows how to play hard and keep their foot on the gas!
Standout Performers
Among the stars this season was Becca Heitzig, winner of the SJ-R’s Female Athlete of the Year award for two years in a row. Becca didn’t just shine on the basketball court; she also dominated the cross country scene, bagging the individual Class 2A cross country title, and was a vital part of the volleyball team that came oh-so-close to becoming state champions, earning the status of state runners-up. She even managed to snag a third gold medal in the 2A 800-meter run and holds the record from 2022!
On the opposing side, Chatham Glenwood brought their own star athlete, Katelyn Lehnen, who claimed victory in the sprint category. Yet, despite the competition, our girls rose to the challenge and brought home the trophy!
A Bright Future Ahead
But the excitement doesn’t stop there! Coach Froebe is now making waves at Colorado State University, where she claimed the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Week award. And let’s not forget about Becca — she’s taking her talents to Iowa State University to continue her athletic journey!
Lincoln High School has a rich tradition of excellence in basketball that just keeps growing with every game we play. Recently, the Lincoln Varsity Girls Basketball team has been busy extending their winning streak, which now stands at an impressive eight games! Just on January 2, 2025, they defeated Bay High School with a score of 55-43. Not to mention, they triumphed over Thomasville High School, winning 57-46, and beat Valdosta High School by just two points, wrapping up at 49-47!
Earlier in December, they faced tough competition, but they stood tall and powered through with wins against teams like Madison County High School (65-36) and FAMU DRS High School (44-13). Even though they faced a couple of setbacks against Florida State University High School and North Florida Educational Institute High School, they bounced back stronger than ever.
Strong Teams All Around
