FSU students cheering at a university outdoor track and field event

News Summary

Florida State University (FSU) is buzzing with excitement as the track and field season kicks off with the Terry Long FSU Relays. Additionally, the women’s basketball team experiences a significant transition with star guard Ta’Niya Latson entering the transfer portal. Meanwhile, FSU’s football team prepares for a challenging 2025 season. With these developments, FSU has a thrilling year ahead for its sports programs.

Exciting Times Ahead for Florida State University Sports!

Florida is buzzing with excitement as Florida State University (FSU) prepares to kick off its outdoor track and field season in style! Mark your calendars for the March 27-28, 2025 weekend, as FSU hosts the highly-anticipated Terry Long FSU Relays. This event isn’t just any ordinary meet; it’s a tribute to one of the most influential figures in FSU’s athletic history, the legendary coach Terry Long.

A Tribute to a Coaching Legend

Terry Long wasn’t just a coach; he was a trailblazer who shaped FSU’s track and field program from 1988 to 2003. As a student-athlete himself from 1959 to 1963, he made a significant mark by setting records in the 220 low hurdles and the 120 high hurdles, all while being part of teams that set relay records. His coaching career was nothing short of spectacular, leading 10 teams to Metro or ACC Championships and earning the title of Coach of the Year a whopping 14 times.

Long’s impressive legacy includes mentoring 272 all-conference athletes, guiding nine Olympians, and watching his athletes achieve 82 All-America performances. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2005. During the FSU Relays event, a special recognition of Coach Long will take place at 1:50 p.m. on the infield, and best part? Admission is free for anyone looking to celebrate this incredible legacy!

Track Team Performance Update

Before heading into this outdoor season, the FSU track and field teams wrapped up their indoor season on March 15, 2025, at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championship in Boston. There were some standout performances, including one of the track stars who finished seventh with a time of 7.18 seconds, tying the fourth-fastest time in school history, garnering first-team All-America honors! Other notable performances came from Andre Korbmacher and Tyson Williams, who earned second-team All-America honors in the men’s 60-meter hurdles.

Women’s Basketball Shifts Gears

Speaking of changes, the FSU women’s basketball team is facing a significant transition. In the wake of the team’s elimination from the NCAA Tournament, star guard Ta’Niya Latson has announced her decision to enter the transfer portal. Latson’s incredible performance this year led her to be the top scorer among all Division I players, making her a hot topic in the sports world.

Latson maintained a close relationship with head coach Brooke Wyckoff during her time at FSU, giving fans and analysts much to speculate about her move. Some wonder if her transfer decision is driven by financial opportunities and her desire for better tournament success. It’s widely acknowledged that Florida State’s athletic program operates with less financial clout compared to other schools in the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences, which may influence her choices moving forward.

Looking Ahead to Football Season

But it’s not just track and basketball that are making headlines. The FSU football team is gearing up for a challenging 2025 season. Kicking off against Alabama on August 30, the Seminoles are expected to face a tough schedule ahead. There will be plenty of changes for the team, including new offensive and defensive coordinators and a new quarterback. As they prepare for the season, they will also face three of the top 15 quarterbacks in college football, ensuring an exciting season for fans and players alike!

With so much happening at Florida State University, there’s no shortage of excitement. Whether you’re a fan of track and field, women’s basketball, or football, there’s plenty to look forward to as these talented athletes gear up for an exhilarating year ahead!
