Florida State University is taking steps to improve their football program after a disappointing 2-10 season by welcoming 11 new transfers from the portal. Head Coach Mike Norvell aims to rebuild the roster, focusing on size and strength, with standout names such as quarterback Thomas Castellanos and wide receiver Duce Robinson. The additions aim to enhance both the offensive and defensive lines, while the coaching team prioritizes a mix of immediate talent and future development.
In the heart of Tallahassee, Florida State University is making some significant moves to bolster their football roster after a less-than-stellar 2-10 season. The Seminoles have turned their sights to the transfer portal, reeling in 11 new players to beef up their squad and build a foundation for a more promising future.
The latest transfer class flaunts some exciting names, with highlights including quarterback Thomas Castellanos and wide receiver Duce Robinson. What’s particularly notable about this class is the focus on size. The Seminoles acquired six players towering at 6-foot-5 or taller. In a twist, only one player, Castellanos, stands just 5-foot-9, a move that suggests a desire to add formidable height to the lineup.
After last season’s struggles, Head Coach Mike Norvell is eager to usher in a quick turnaround. With an impressive 31 new players joining from both high schools and the transfer portal, there’s a buzz of excitement and anticipation building in the air.
Castellanos is a name Seminole fans should keep on their radar. Having previously faced off against FSU while playing at Boston College, he showed considerable potential with impressive stats: 1,366 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions in just eight games. In the 2023 season alone, Castellanos racked up 2,248 passing yards, threw for 15 touchdowns, and, intriguingly, rushes accumulated to 1,113 yards with 13 touchdowns, showcasing his dual-threat capability.
One of the glaring issues last season was the offensive line, which struggled under pressure, allowing 25 sacks and averaging a disappointing 89.9 rushing yards per game. To combat these challenges, Norvell hired a new offensive line coach, Herb Hand, while also bringing in four offensive line transfers: Gunnar Hansen, Adrian Medley, Micah Pettus, and Luke Petitbon. All these new additions are over 6-foot-3 and weigh in at over 285 pounds, adding both strength and stability to the front line. Petitbon, in particular, made strides in pass and run-blocking with impressive grades from Pro Football Focus, indicating he’s ready to make an impact.
The tight end game is also getting a refreshing boost with the transfers of Markeston Douglas from Arizona State and Randy Pittman. Both players will enhance blocking capabilities, a crucial aspect for improving run game effectiveness as the Seminoles look to change last season’s narrative.
Adding depth to the receiving corps, Duce Robinson at 6-foot-6 is anticipated to become a valuable vertical threat and replicate the success seen with previous transfer star Johnny Wilson. The addition of defensive edge players James Williams from Nebraska and Deante McCray from Western Kentucky will also bolster the defensive line, filling the gaps left by departing key players. Furthermore, Stefon Thompson, the lone linebacker transfer, is expected to bring much-needed depth to an area in desperate need.
While FSU has certainly made a splash in the transfer portal, it’s clear that the coaching team understands the importance of building a pipeline of homegrown talent alongside these transfers. The Seminoles are committed to both immediate improvement and sustainable growth as they continue evaluating potential players while the transfer window remains open. With spring practice just around the corner, fans are eager to see how these new faces will gel on the field and contribute to a more successful season ahead.
