In the lively city of Tallahassee, the FAMU DRS Varsity Girls Basketball team has been navigating a rocky road this season. Associate Coach James Brown has stepped up as the interim head coach after the departure of Ericka Cromartie, who led the team to fantastic achievements during her decade-long tenure.
As the calendar gears up for 2025, the Baby Rattlers have had their share of thrilling moments and tough losses on the court. On December 19, they faced the Gadsden County High School team, falling short with a score of 22-36. The loss followed a hard-fought victory just a few days earlier, on December 16, where they triumphed over Jefferson County High School with a 44-30 win.
Earlier in the month, the girls endured losses to teams like Lincoln High School (44-13) and Leon High School (53-35). Notably, their back-to-back encounters against Godby High School resulted in a pair of defeats as well, with scores of 23-59 on December 2 and 29-37 just a couple of days earlier. However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom—on December 11, they edged out Maclay High School in a nail-biter, winning 37-34, giving fans something to cheer about.
Following a fruitful 10-year journey, Coach Cromartie has moved on to shine at the Florida A&M women’s basketball program as an assistant coach. Under her expert guidance, the Baby Rattlers captured two state championships in 2015 and 2016 and had several appearances in the Final Four. This year, Coach Cromartie’s remarkable career garnered accolades such as the 2021 All-Big Bend Coach of the Year. Her contributions to the FAMU DRS team are undoubtedly invaluable, and she leaves behind a rich legacy.
As Coach Brown take the reins, fans and players alike are looking forward to a new direction for the program. Although it’s a challenging transition, many believe that with hard work, dedication, and teamwork, the Baby Rattlers will rise to the occasion.
