Tallahassee, Florida: A Rising Star in Christian Streetwear
Kyler Andrews, a fourth-year computer science student at Florida A&M University, is making waves with his entrepreneurial venture, BOWYA, a Christian streetwear brand. Founded on his birthday in 2021, BOWYA stands for Because of Who/Whom You Are, and aims to blend faith with fashion through creatively designed clothing.
Turning Passion into Action
Andrews identified a gap in the market for stylish religious clothing. “I feel like most religious clothing is simple,” he explained. “I wanted to create something more complex so that people can wear clothes as a regular fit and still feel fly.” BOWYA features a range of offerings that encourage faith without sacrificing style, addressing a demand for more contemporary religious apparel.
From PWI to HBCU: Embracing Change
Originally attending Georgia Southern University as a college athlete, Andrews transitioned to Tallahassee in 2022, transferring to FAMU. His change in environment from a predominantly white institution (PWI) to a historically Black college and university (HBCU) has had a profound impact on his personal growth. “It has got me out of my comfort zone as far as being social and having one-on-one conversations,” he said.
Building Community and Connections
Andrews has become a well-loved figure on campus, fostering connections with fellow students. Ashton Johnson, a third-year broadcast journalism student, noted, “It is always love when we see each other… I can share my accomplishments with him.” This sense of community is a hallmark of Andrews’ experience at FAMU.
Engaging in Service
Last spring, Andrews joined the Godfather chapter of Progressive Black Men, Inc., a national organization dedicated to uplifting young Black men through community service, professional development, and brotherhood. In his brief time with the organization, he has already contributed over 50 hours of service, demonstrating his commitment to giving back while also providing mentorship through coaching and teaching.
A Leader Among His Peers
Colleagues express admiration for Andrews’ leadership and dedication. Cameron Bowsky, a fellow member of the chapter, shared, “Kyler has become one of my favorite brothers in the chapter, as he led bible studies and helped me with my clothing brand while running his own.” Andrews’ passion for helping others shines through in his interactions and contributions.
A Vision for the Future
Andrews aims to balance his career plans as a software developer at a Fortune 500 company while continuing to grow BOWYA. Despite only being at FAMU for two years, he has made a lasting impression through hard work and dedication. His experiences at the university have not only helped him grow individually but have also allowed him to impact those around him.
Conclusion: A Lasting Legacy
As he continues his academic journey and entrepreneurial endeavors, Kyler Andrews embodies the spirit of community, creativity, and faith at Florida A&M University. With plans to keep building on his accomplishments, Andrews is poised to leave a significant mark on both his campus and the wider world of fashion.
