Florida State University (FSU) has taken a groundbreaking step in nursing education by introducing the nation’s first master’s of science in nursing degree focused on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in health care. This innovative program, launched by FSU’s College of Nursing, aims to harness emerging technologies to improve patient care and expand digital health initiatives.
The new AI-focused nursing degree is part of a larger effort by FSU to address the nursing shortage in Florida and prepare a fresh wave of healthcare professionals. The program includes two concentrations: the AI Applications in Health Care concentration and a more traditional nursing education concentration. Applications for the inaugural spring 2025 cohort were opened in September and closed in October, with an expected class size of 35 students.
The launch of this unique program aligns with the state’s initiatives to boost nursing education. In February, Florida’s State University System reported a record of 1,800 nursing graduates, aided by a $46 million investment aimed at improving nursing education. The Florida Board of Governors is actively seeking to address ongoing shortages within the nursing workforce.
AI technology, which allows machines to mimic human intelligence through learning and reasoning, is becoming increasingly prevalent in healthcare settings. Hospitals and clinics have begun implementing AI systems to enhance efficiency and patient care. Dean Jing Wang of FSU’s College of Nursing emphasized the relevance of AI integration, stating, “AI is rapidly expanding into every facet of our lives, and health care is no exception.”
The new AI nursing program will be offered entirely online, making it accessible for a wider range of students. This initiative is part of the College of Nursing’s strategic plan for 2023-2028, aiming to create a new generation of nursing professionals equipped with the skills needed to leverage advanced technologies for the healthcare industry. Alongside learning about AI, the program will provide guidelines on the ethical and safe implementation of such technologies in clinical settings.
As FSU positions itself at the forefront of digital health and innovation in healthcare training, the program is expected to foster valuable collaborations in the future. Dean Wang highlighted the importance of developing healthcare leaders who can navigate the intersection of technology and patient care. “We are leading in the state of Florida and nationally in digital health and health care innovation,” Wang stated.
FSU’s proactive approach to nursing education through the integration of AI technology represents a significant moment in the field. The online master’s degree with a concentration in AI applications in healthcare not only responds to current workforce challenges but also prepares students for the future of health care where technology plays an ever-growing role.
