A Life Well-Lived
Charlene was born in Palmetto, Florida, and later moved to Tallahassee as a teenager. After graduating from Leon High School in 1957, she went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida. But her thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there. She furthered her education by obtaining a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration, as well as a Masters of Vocational Education. To top it all off, she achieved a Specialist in Education degree from Florida State University, showcasing her unwavering commitment to the field of education.
Dedicated Educator
Charlene’s educational journey began in Escambia County, where she made her mark as a dedicated educator. She reached the pinnacle of her career as an administrator, working across various educational levels and focusing on vocational education. Even after retiring in Leon County, she didn’t step away from her passion—she remained engaged by working part-time at Bevis Funeral Home.
Her love for education was matched by her dedication to community service. Charlene was an active member of several prestigious organizations, including Garnet Key at Florida State, Phi Beta Kappa, and Phi Delta Kappa. Her impact extended far beyond the classroom as she volunteered for countless organizations, helping to shape her community for the better.
A Woman of Many Interests
Outside of her professional endeavors, Charlene had a colorful variety of interests. She found joy in reading, traveling, and enjoying the great outdoors. Family time was sacred to her, as was the love for theatre and music. You could often find her soaking up the sun at the beach, fostering connections with nature and loved ones.
A Supportive Community Member
Throughout her life, Charlene played an instrumental role in several organizations, including Leadership Pensacola, the Tallahassee Junior Woman’s Club, and the Boys’ Ranch Board of Directors, among many others. She was a faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Tallahassee and had previously contributed her time and talents to Faith Presbyterian Church and Metcalf United Methodist Church in Georgia. Her legacy of giving is palpable, with numerous organizations benefitting from her enthusiasm and leadership.
Family Always Comes First
Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 28 years, Charles Reese, and other family members, Charlene is survived by four children, Mindy, LeeAnne, Jo, and Gerald, Jr. She also leaves behind a host of adoring grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, along with two brothers, Bert and Larry. The family is truly a testament to the love and warmth she cultivated throughout her life.
Final Farewell
Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Charlene’s life. A visitation is scheduled from 5 PM to 7 PM on March 6, 2025, at Bevis Funeral Home, located at 200 John Knox Road. The funeral service will take place on March 7, 2025, at 11 AM, followed by interment at Roselawn Cemetery.
