Florida State University softball team celebrating a home run in Puerto Vallarta

News Summary

The Florida State University (FSU) softball team kicked off their 2025 season in Puerto Vallarta at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, facing tough competition. Despite a challenging first game against the #4 ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls, FSU showed resilience, improving their play in their second matchup against Northern Colorado. The team is now gearing up for their next challenge against Louisiana Tech. Fans are eager to see how the season unfolds.

Puerto Vallarta Welcomes FSU Softball for 2025 Season Kickoff

What a whirlwind start to the 2025 season for the Florida State University (FSU) softball team! The excitement unfolded in the beautiful city of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The sun was shining, teams were eager, and FSU was ready to showcase their talents on the field. However, the results were a bit of a mixed bag as they navigated their first day of competition.

Tough Competition Against Ranked Cowgirls

Right out of the gate, FSU faced a tough opponent—the #4 ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls. It was a game that had fans on the edge of their seats as FSU tried to make their mark. Unfortunately, things didn’t start off so well. Despite having runners on base, FSU couldn’t manage to put any points on the board in the first inning. The starting pitcher for FSU, Ashtyn Danley, had a bit of a rough start, allowing two runs in that same inning due to a combination of a double, a walk, wild pitches, and an error.

As the game progressed, Oklahoma State established a 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning, fueled by a home run from their third baseman, Tallen Edwards. It wasn’t until the third inning that FSU finally got on the scoreboard with a spectacular home run from Jaysoni Beachum, bringing the score to a closer 3-1. However, the Cowgirls responded, and FSU found themselves trailing again after Oklahoma State added another run in the fourth inning, pushing the score to 4-1.

Even with their backs against the wall, FSU showed resilience. A sacrifice fly from Annabelle Widra helped narrow the gap to 4-2, but the Cowgirls weren’t done yet. They had a strong fifth and sixth innings, racking up five more runs and extending their lead to a daunting 9-2. But wait! FSU rallied in the seventh inning, hitting two home runs courtesy of Harp and Beachum, finishing the game with a score of 9-6. All in all, it was a competitive match where Beachum and Kennedy Harp shined, both recording impressive statistics with two hits and five combined RBIs.

Rebounding Against Northern Colorado

After that intense game, FSU was ready to rebound in their second matchup against Northern Colorado. And rebound they did! The Seminoles were quick to take control of the game, scoring two runs in the very first inning, thanks to a brilliant double from Katie Dack. The energy in the dugout was palpable, and fans were thrilled to see their team in action.

This time, the pop from the bats was a lot more effective, and freshman Jazzy Francik took the mound for her first game as an FSU Seminole, putting up a fantastic performance. She allowed only one unearned run in six innings and struck out four batters, exhibiting her undeniable talent. Adding to the excitement, Jahni Kerr landed a triple, and Harp continued her hot streak, pushing the lead to 4-0 in the second inning. FSU wasn’t about to let up!

By the seventh inning, the team had increased their lead to 7-1, with Harp impressively going 4-for-4 throughout the game. As the icing on the cake, Annabelle Widra closed out the game by pitching the final inning and striking out the last batter, an excellent finish for the Seminoles.

Looking Ahead

As the FSU softball team leaves the beautiful beaches of Puerto Vallarta, they’re already set for their next challenge. They’ll be up against Louisiana Tech on February 7th at 2 p.m. EST. With the excitement of their season just beginning, fans are eagerly waiting to see what this talented team has in store next. Will they continue their triumphs or face new challenges? One thing’s for sure; the journey is just beginning!
