The board also received an insightful Annual Status Report on the Leon County Water Quality Monitoring Program, as well as a detailed report on the food distribution and healthcare services available in Woodville.

In addition, they reviewed the Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Performance and Financial Report, plus an update from the Sustainability Program, which highlighted the semiannual progress on curbside waste collection. It’s great to see the county being proactive in keeping residents informed about these vital services!

Storm Shelter Discussion Delayed

However, not everything was approved without a hitch. Commissioner Caban raised concerns regarding the feasibility of placing a storm shelter in Woodville. After some back-and-forth, the entire board voted unanimously to delay this discussion for three months. Affordable Housing Proposal Denied

In a closely watched vote regarding the Capital Area Justice Ministry Proposal, the board decided not to reallocate 20% of the county’s share of the Blueprint infrastructure surtax for an Affordable Rental Housing Land Acquisition and Leaseback Program. While many commissioners felt this was the right call, Proctor and O’Keefe stood firm on their support for the proposal, indicating a split on how best to address housing needs.

In exciting contract news, the board gave the green light to T & K Construction LLC for the Solid Waste Facility Landfill Closure Project, valued at over $16 million. On a positive note, Leon County reported the addition of 19,000 jobs since 2022, primarily thanks to the Amazon Fulfillment Center. With an impressive economic impact of $200 million, residents are enjoying the average salaries of $41,500 this growth brings.

The county is also gearing up to host the 2025 Motor, Drive Systems and Magnetics conference, expecting to draw over 400 industry leaders, which is sure to highlight Leon County on the regional map.

In the spirit of community support, plans are underway to construct 1,200 affordable housing units, including the upcoming Lake Bradford Apartments designed for low-income families. The county has also secured $750,000 from the Community Development Block Grant Program to rehabilitate homes for families needing assistance.
