A Week Full of Events Begins

The festivities take off on Wednesday, January 15, at noon, where the Leon County Government will host its 2025 Annual MLK Day Celebration in the lovely rotunda of the Leon County Courthouse. Here, some deserving locals will receive awards that celebrate their tireless efforts in advancing the community in our fight for social justice. The celebration will feature Dr. Timothy Beard, the Interim President of Florida A&M University, who will share thoughtful insights as the keynote speaker of the morning.

This event is made possible through the collective efforts of the MLK Foundation of Florida, the Inter-Civic Council of the Southern Christian Leadership Council, and the Leon County Government. It sets a joyful tone for what’s sure to be an impactful week ahead.

Breakfast with a Purpose

Fast forward to Friday, January 17, where the Tallahassee NAACP will be hosting its annual Dreamers and Doers Breakfast at the Tucker Civic Center. Doors will open at 6:30 a.m., and if you’re hoping to sample some delicious breakfast treats, be sure to arrive early, as food service starts at 7:00 a.m. This delightful gathering is sure to uplift and motivate attendees while celebrating the pursuit of Dr. King’s dream.

Celebrating Excellence

This year also brings something new and exciting with the inaugural Distinguished Black Classical Excellence Awards. Set for Sunday, January 19, Patrice Floyd of Javacya Arts Conservatory will guide the ceremony, which honors the outstanding contributions of Black classical musicians and educators. Those who attend will also enjoy an enchanting musical performance by the Javacya Elite Chamber Orchestra at the Marriott AC Hotel at Cascades Park.

A Day to March, Celebrate, and Reflect

Then comes Monday, January 20, a day brimming with unity and celebration. The day kicks off with a special NAACP Presentation and a march from C.K. Steele Plaza to the Leon County Courthouse starting at 9:00 a.m.. This will be followed by an enthusiastic MLK Day Parade from noon to 1:30 p.m. along North Monroe Street. The theme for this year is “A Celebration Of Community Champions”, shining a spotlight on those who bring positive changes to society.

Following the parade, residents can head to the MLK Day Festival at Cascades Park from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.. Expect live entertainment and delicious local food vendors showcasing their culinary delights! From 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Tallahassee Nights Live entertainment series will be heating up the Adderley Amphitheater.

Engage and Dialogue

Part of the day’s offerings will also include a Day of Dialogue, titled “Art as Activism: The Role of Artists in Social and Political Movements”, taking place from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Participants can join local artists and activists as they delve into the discussion led by Ted Ellis from the Civil Rights Institute at Florida State University.

Commemorating with Respect

Additionally, Florida State University is set to honor Dr. King’s legacy with a week-long series of events beginning January 15, leading up to January 25, themed “United We Stand.” Meanwhile, FAMU will hold an annual MLK Convocation on January 17, giving participants a chance to reflect on King’s monumental influence.
